  3. Although the exact origin of mechanical clocks is 
  4. unknown, several recorded examples appeared in the 
  5. 14th century. They tended to be huge and inaccurate 
  6. devices. One such clock built by Henry De Vick for 
  7. the royal palace in Paris was powered by a 500 pound
  8. weight which descended over 32 feet.
